Yay! The new Summer Distress Ink set is now in the store and as expected, the colours are vibrant and fabulous! I set to work getting inky with them today, making three cards for a Sweet Summertime Distress Card Class coming up on Wednesday night! I'd love to have you join me :) We'll explore several different ways you can use Distress Ink to add fabulous bursts of colour to your projects!
The cost is just $10 if you purchase the Summer Distress Inks from us and bring them to the class. ($15 if you aren't bringing/ buying your ink.)
You'll also want to bring your basic class kit (adhesives, scissors...) as well as Ink blending tools & foam (in stock if you need foam for your new ink pads).
Hope you can join us! Class is at 6:30pm this Wednesday :)
I had a great, ink-filled day today! This morning I taught our first Technique Tags class, featuring Distress Stain. It was a lot of fun and I'm already looking forward to the next one :) Some of the ladies stayed for our afternoon 12 Tags Drop In, where we each did our versions of Tim Holtz's June tag. I took a photo of them all to share with you, but it's blurry :( so hopefully Janet's turned out better and she'll share on her blog!
I won't go into much detail here, since Tim shows the steps so well on his blog! Here's a closer look at some parts of my tag, though. The blue ink & Distress Stain I used for my tag was Stormy Sky, I really love it together with Vintage Photo!
I'm having a fantastic time with the 12 Tags of 2012- it's so enjoyable to get together and create something like this each month!
I also wanted to share with you a photo of the pile of tags left on our table after our Tag Techniques class today- wish I'd taken a photo of everyone's tags, there was all sorts of pretty inky-ness going on :)

summer... Creative Kids Classes! We welcome your
input as we put together a summer kids program which will include
regular (every Tuesday?) afternoons for kids to come and get creative
in our studio! We plan to feature a variety of projects
like cards, mini books, 3D items... If this sounds like
something kids you know might enjoy, we'd love to hear from you
as we decide on days, etc.
Perhaps you noticed, I really love this hot air balloon stamp by Tim Holtz (kinda hoping he releases a mini version for summer CHA!) and especially with the What's Up collection of papers by Basic Grey! They're just made for each other...
We made this card at our What's Up Sampler class yesterday using the 6x6 pad & black Archival Ink. I stamped on the background map paper and then paper pieced the balloon on another patterned paper. I didn't have a cloud die (gonna have to fix that!) so I hand drew the cloud and made a template for it. The dream stamp is a $2 studio g image, which I love, simply stamped on another scrap of paper.
Inside we added this fabulous sentiment by Tim Holtz:
and here's a peek at the canvas we made! Wish I could take credit for the design, it's a fantastic piece designed by a BG Designer!
I took a bunch of great photos from my visit with a friend I hadn't seen in years... her youngest was delighted to smile for the camera so long as I was pushing him on the 'circle swing' in their backyard, so it was a win-win situation :) I used papers by Simple Stories and stickers & embellishments by Basic Grey (POTM leftovers!) and here's what I came up with:
a closer look at the 12x12 page:
Bingo Cards, buttons & twine!
The right page was made to fit into the vertical 4x6 page protectors by We R Memory Keepers. I absolutely love how these pocket pages fit so well together with Simple Stories papers to make capturing your memories quick & easy! I love the concept of mixing together full layouts and pages with pockets in one album. It allows you to have all your photos in one place and still add a creative touch to your favourites! The Simple Stories paper lines includes sheets of 4x6 pieces, like I've used here, to mix with photos:
I added some simple embellishments (sticker, twine, pin, washi tape, button) to this block:
Quick & Easy!
Buttons & Twine is the theme for our June Challenge. We'd love to have you play along!
Happy Father's Day! I hope y'all found some time to make a hand made card for your Dad before his special day... if not, I'm sure he'd agree with me that it's not too late :)
(There's still a few more hours until it's officially Father's Day... right?)
I made this one for my Dad when I sat down to experiment with Distress Markers a little... turns out they work pretty slick on glossy cardstock! My background features an image inked with 2 shades of Distress Markers stamped onto glossy cardstock, plus a few extra gear images. The hot air balloon was stamped twice, once with Distress Markers and then slightly offset with Black Archival ink. I then stamped it a third time, using Archival on another sheet of glossy cardstock. I shaded with two shades of Distress directly on the paper, then used a water brush to pull the colours, adding more from my craft sheet 'palette' until I got the intensity of colour I wanted. I then trimmed the balloon and mounted it with 3D squares over my background.
The fabric layer you see is that linen paper I posted about earlier this week. I love how well it takes ink! I coloured directly on it with Distress Markers & blended with a water brush. The embellishment is a metal tab from Tim Holtz. All stamps (except those little gears) are by Tim Holtz. The gears are by Stampendous.
Mom (Julie) celebrated her birthday while she was away last weekend (happy birthday Mom!). She was back in the store today and I gave her the journal I made for her.
This project did not turn out at all like I anticipated... but part of the fun of creating is going with the flow and making changes as you need to, hopefully making something beautiful when all is done! Here's what I created...
This 4x8 journal was all about playing with the fabulous woodgrain texture! I used a journal kit by Studio Calico that comes unbound so you can ink & paint it up and bind it however you like. I used two layers of canvas tape (the top is gapher tape by 7gypsies from my stash) together with some glossy accents to hold it together nice & firm. The inside pages have a great grid design, making this perfect for journaling, sketching and more! I painted the cover with a combination of Claudine Hellmuth paints & Dylusions sprays and finished it off (after adding foam Thickers for lettering) with some Perfect Pearl Mist. I had also sprayed some Red Dylusions after adding my Thickers, which was very obvious when I went to add Crackle Accents to the letters! It turned out to be one of those very cool accidents ;) The bling and that gorgeous felt poppy are both by Prima.
I did a quick tag up with some Dylusions and added Thickers to it as well, then wrapped the journal with some tissue paper & twine. The ribbons on my tag are the new Inkable Crinkable Ribbon which ink up beautifully with Dylusions & Distress Stains!
Today is a special day in my family! Mom is away spending some time with her sisters and today they are celebrating one of my aunts as she is being welcomed as a Judge in the BC Courts! We're all so proud of her! Mom made a special card for her, with a pocket inside for each of us to include a note.
The background is some new linen paper we have in the store- a special purchase available for just $1.00 per sheet (reg. $2.50 each!). It's paper backed lined and we learned that it is stunning when you put it in an embossing folder! Mom embossed it and then inked it with Distress Ink. The texture is really lovely! We kept it really simple with some paper flowers and bling on a kraft card (new 5x7 cards in the store at a great price). Here's a close up of the texture:
The linen takes inks really nicely- I've been playing around with it a bit and should have some samples to show you soon!
p.s. did you see the news? New Summer Seasonal Distress Ink was released today! We've got it up for pre-order on our new online store! Local customers can pre-order online as well, no extra charges will be added once you sign in with a local postal code & select pick up in store for a shipping method. You can also opt to pay in the store when you pick up your ink :)
Today for Coffee & a Card we made a masculine card that is perfect for Father's Day... we created an ATC on Specialty Stamping Paper with Distress Ink, Distress Markers & Archival Ink and mounted it on a pocket card created with a Tim Holtz on the edge die. Stamps are by Tim Holtz & Stampendous.
Here it is with a gift card tucked in the pocket:
It was a fun one to make! We might have materials for a couple more people to make them if you show up Friday morning before it's all put away :)
Happy June! We've got a new Stamp of the Month (SOTM) to share with you today, a lovely set of images & sentiments from Penny Black. This is a clear set of stamps that comes with 8 images and 8 small sentiments. Such a versatile set! We've paired it with papers from the 'Anthologie' collection by We R Memory Keepers for this month's sample board.
Let's kick things off with two cards created by our guest DT member, Dorothy!
Here's a card I (Tara) created, using copper embossed images. If you look close you'll see that two of them were stamped on some text print paper from this collection. I love the little bit of detail that gives. My images are all watercoloured using Distress Markers. The butterflies and corner vine dies are both by Memory Box. A touch of Stickles finished it off.
This final card was a joint effort... the main image/layers was actually from a mini card I did as a make & take at the Penny Black booth at CHA! Mom took it and transformed it into a standard size card :) The images were stamped with clear embossing powder on white and coloured with Stampersmarkers by Faber Castel. They're super juicy India Ink markers and blended really nicely!
We'd love to see what you create with these stamps! Have fun!
One last thing before I go... I have a tip to share with you (that I got from Tim Holtz) for using clear stamps. Sometimes clear stamps just will not give you a good impression and seem to resist the ink you're trying to stamp them with (particularly if you're using a water based ink like Distress). I found these to be that sort of stamps! It was super helpful to prime my stamp by inking it up with Ranger's BLACK Archival first. I actually inked my entire set and stamped on scrap paper several times until I started getting a nice crisp image, then cleaned my stamps with water and a rag. Now that my stamp set is primed, I can use whichever ink I like and get a perfect impression!
We've been sharing this tip for a bit and I think we're down to just one ink pad left in the store, so we'll be getting more in stock as soon as we can! Let us know if you'd like us to hold one for you :)
