What's Up?

I'm kinda in love with the What's Up collection by Basic Grey!  The colours are cheerful, the patterns are whimsical and the little flag embellishments (24 in a pack... so I had lots to play with) are just so stinkin' CUTE!  After completing our POTM layout, I set to work creating cards with the leftover papers, stickers & embellishments... here's what I came up with!

This one uses the two bonus 'digi paper' elements that are exclusive for POTM members.  I pulled out some Tim Holtz stamps and pieced together this fab water balloon, added a fabric cloud sticker and of course, I added one of those cute flags.
Lastly, here's the two 'bonus cards' designed by Basic Grey, which also feature the bonus digi elements.

12 Tags of 2012 {May}

I had the pleasure of getting inky this weekend with a group of lovely ladies at our monthly 12 Tags Drop In, where we each created our own version of Tim Holtz's May tag!  I decided to add some spring colour to my tag to brighten it up.  We improvised on a few embellishments and used the smaller version of the stamps Tim used, but otherwise pretty much stuck to the instruction as Tim gave in his post

The colour in my project comes from the Archival inks in my background, Aquamarine and Rose Madder.  I've had my eye on these colours for a while so it was nice to have an excuse to buy & use them :)  My blue flowers were inked with the new Peacock Feathers Distress Ink, the soft pink one was inked with the Rose Madder Archival ink and the small pink ones were already coloured.  I went into my stash and found an old charm from Making Memories to dangle from my hanger, added some buttons and a sticker from Tim's Idea-ology file tabs.  Janet was sweet enough to bring us some bobbins she'd had her hubby cut in half for us.  My thread fell off when I tried to ink it (oops!) so I wrapped twine around it instead.  Isn't it cute?
Thanks for coming and checking out my tag!  Before you go too far, please check out this post for an opportunity to win some spending money at our NEW online store, which you can visit right here!  We'll be adding new products to the store regularly, so don't hesitate to let us know if there is something you are looking for that isn't there yet :)

Thanks for checking out my version of Tim's May tag!

Until then, here's some peeks at what I've been working on! I made a canvas with the flowers from my little tutorial and we got some new ribbon in the store that inks up soooo nice- we're calling it "inkable crinkable" ribbon and you're gonna want some!

See ya again real soon!

Gelato Flower Tutorial

Hi! I'm here today to share a quick tutorial (inspired by Balzer) for the flowers I shared in my last post! You'll notice right away that this tutorial shows a different coloured flower... which you'll see on another project soon, but the process is the same. These were quick and fun to make, hope you'll try them!

First, cut multiple 'wonky' circles from a lightweight paper.  I chose the new antique papers by Bazzill Basics, but you could use actual vintage book paper, newspaper or sheet music... (note that newspaper may bleed and it is not acid free, if you're planning to use these on a scrapbook page).  I used some offset circle dies from Lifestyle Crafts/QuicKutz but you could also hand cut circles in various sizes.

Stack up your circles and attach them together with a brad.
Pull out some Gelatos by Faber Castel and colour your flowers!  I coloured directly on my flowers as well as using my craft sheet as a palette (mist water directly over the scribbles) and a brush to get them nice and wet with these fun watercolors.
Once you're happy with the colour, take a heat tool to your wet flowers.  This should cause them to curl slightly, but go ahead and help them along by bending them and adding some wrinkles.

Your final touch is to add some Distress Ink- I chose brown to finish them off.  Don't be too gentle... these are not dainty flowers we're making here :) Rotate your layers as you go, revealing more of the still white paper layers peeking underneath to add some depth.
FYI, my larger flower has about 9 layers and my small one has about 5.

May Flowers

I finally took some time to create my project for our May Challenge: Handmade flowers!   It's bright and colourful and I got to get all inky, which is always fun :)
I had lots of fun creating these flowers, but wasn't sure what I wanted to do with them exactly... I made them in a different set of colours as well and am still in the midst of a project with them, but I'm not sure that'll get finished today!  It didn't take me long to figure out what to do when I saw the current CAS-ual Fridays challenge to use punches or dies sponsored by Lawn Fawn stamps... so I got my stuff together to make a clean and simple card with a sentiment by Lawn Fawn!   My layers are grungy, but my layout is definitely CAS, hope you like it!
We'd love to see more people play along with our Seriously Creative Challenge to make some handmade flowers this month!  Hop on over to the Challenge blog to join us!  Check back here on Monday for a brief photo tutorial of how I made these flowers!

Umbrella Man (CC2C #5)

I'm playing along with the Compendium of Curiosities 2 Challenge again... this time we're using Tim's "Shattered Stains" technique, which I love!  You can find the how-to written in A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol. 2 on page 48.  (We have one copy of this book left in stock at Creative Accents!)

I'm still playing around with the Spring Distress Ink set, so again I've used that as my colour palette.  My tag background is done with those colours as well as some brushed corduroy reinker for a burst of brown, using the wrinkle free distress technique.  I love how splotchy it turned out and almost hated to cover it up...

Umbrella man is my focal point, and he features the shattered stains technique.  The sentiment was inked with Distress Markers on a Specialty Stamping Paper ATC, with a light covering of Brushed Corduroy over that and a generous splattering of water :)  I have to confess... I went and saw 'Dark Shadows' at the theatre last weekend and as soon as I saw Johnny Depp with a trench coat, hat and umbrella I knew I'd never look at the Umbrella man the same again :)

While I was playing, I tried another tag featuring last weeks 'faded layers' technique... I went for a masculine look this time and I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.  I kept it pretty simple, but added a few gear brads (which I painted with some black Vintaj Patinas paint & sanded) for some texture.
All stamps, dies, inks on both tags are by Tim Holtz :)

Fabric Flower

Today I've got a tag that Mom created for our May Challenge (hand made flowers) to share with you!  Isn't it pretty?

She cut several flowers (Tim Holtz Tattered Florals) out of fabric and tulle and sprayed them with a Starburst Spray from Lindy's Stamp Gang, then painted some of them with some Glitter Glam from Tattered Angels- which added both sparkle and stiffness to them.  She left one flower flat and then folded the rest in quarters and stapled them to the base, finishing it off with a pretty button.

The stem is a Lifestyle Crafts die, the stamp is also by Tim Holtz.  The tag is Kraft, spritzed with Ranger Ink Refresher, crumpled (breaks down the fibers and gives it the coolest texture!) then brushed with Perfect Pearls.  The butterflies were painted with leftover spray and glaze that was on the craft mat ;)

We'd love to see you play along with us this month over on our Challenge blog!

Happy Mother's Day!

Remember the tag I posted the other day that was a work in progress? Here it is, transformed into a Mother's Day Card!  My Mom is out of town today, spending time with her own mother, but I managed to have this completed so she could see it before she left ;)
a closer look:

Pretty much everything on this card is Ranger or Tim Holtz (including card stock), except for:
- BoBunny Vintage Dot paper (inside the card)
- Ribbon/ rose trim (available in the store)
- Charms: #1 mom (from my stash) and key (available in the store)

If you are a Mom, I wish you a day full of the people and things that you love!  Have a delightful day, and know in your heart that you are loved!

I'm entering this card in the following challenges:
P.S. here's another tag I made using the same techniques- start (background with new Seasonal Distress Inks) to finish :)

You are special

Just a quick post to share another card I put together at the Fiesta- I really love how the background turned out on this one, which started as a plain white card...

I was inspired at Ranger U to really use up the ink that is left on my craft sheet after I finish a project, and that's exactly what I did here!  I had used my craft sheet as a palette of sorts when I did my previous cards (and some other failed attempts...) so I had a mix of ink colours and brown Distress Ink on the surface already.  I swiped a bit of the new Peacock Feathers Distress Ink (LOVE this colour!) on my mat and spritzed with water, then literally smeared my card in the inky goodness :)  I love how there are spots of more intense colour from the darker Distress Marker shades!  I dried it with a heat tool and inked the edges with my brown (I think I was working with Brushed Corduroy?) to finish off my background, then finished the card very simply with some flowers and  a bird cage image (one of our $2 deals!) in Peacock Feathers.  That fabulous sentiment is an old fave of mine from Hero Arts.

Girlfriends+Coffee= very good thing!

Today I'm sharing with you more of my mucking around with Distress Markers!  This time, I wanted to watercolour an image stamped with Archival ink on Watercolor paper.

I've used one of the new Girlfriends stamps by Art Impressions, which I absolutely love, and paired it with Konnichiwa papers from Basic Grey, which gave me a bright, cheery colour palette to work with!  I've just used some cheap watercolor paper here, so I think I'll experiment with other papers to see what I like...

There were four girlfriends in this stamp, but the one I started with looked pretty awful LOL so I trimmed her out of there!  My experiment included some direct colouring for darker colours, but mostly I scribbled on my craft sheet and used it as a palette with my water brush.  Combining the two gave me more variation in colour intensity, which I liked.  I'm not calling this a work of art, but it's usable, and I think like most things I'll get better with practice!  I had quite a mix of colours on my craft mat when I was done... check back tomorrow and see what I did with it ;)

I don't know if it shows up on the photograph, but I sprayed some Perfect Pearls Mist over my background papers for a touch of shimmer on the card.  The sentiment is one of 3 that comes in a set with this image.  Hope your day is a good one, properly caffeinated and all that ;)

I'm entering this card in the current Art Impressions Challenge: Beverages

Faded Layers CC2C #4

Nothing like a deadline to get ya inky in a hurry! I had a project in mind to work on today, and realized I don't actually own the die I planned on using- oops! Guess I'll borrow from a friend and do that tomorrow! Tonight, I'm squeaking in to play along with CC2C Challenge 4: faded layers! Here's what I created... It's a work in progress (to be transformed into a card), but the base is done in time for my deadline- with 9 minutes to spare!  ;)
I finished my stamped image with some Distress Markers for quick details on the butterflies and inked up some floral ribbon with Distress Stains to finish it off. I'm loving the Spring Seasonal Distress- it's my palette for this tag, with the addition of some Brushed Corduroy Distress!

I used the "faded layers" technique as it's written in A Compendium of Curiosities, Vol. 2 by Tim Holtz... Adding a few tweaks here and there :). Lots of great tutorials in the book!

p.s. see the finished card here

Playing with Distress Markers!

I took a bit of time at our Fiesta to play with my new Distress Markers this weekend!

Both these cards were created with a set of Tim Holtz stamps my buddy Tanya gave me cuz she had duplicates... What a bummer, eh? ;). I inked up my images colouring directly on the rubber with Distress Markers, stamping a random collage of images. Once I was happy with my collage, I inked over the entire card with brown Distress Ink. Pretty simple, but it makes a nice masculine card!

The card blanks I used were pre-cut, they're available in sets of eight cards and envelopes for just $2! Can't beat the price for some cards to have on hand!

I'm back with a closer look at our May SOTM by Hampton Art Stamps! We selected this wood mounted background stamp at CHA and were delighted with the detail in the image as we got a closer look when it arrived!  We've paired it with the Serenity collection by BoBunny for these samples.
Mom (Julie) created this card, stamping the image twice in Versamark ink on black cardstock and dusting it with Perfect Pearls for a pretty shimmer.

Roxy created this cutie- it's just 4x4 but really showcases the SOTM.  Visit her blog for a bit more info on how she created her cards :)
I love the simplicity of this next card as well- it's perfect for Mother's Day (coming up this weekend!):
These flowers are a little bonus on this month's sample board... I stamped the SOTM and clear embossed on white paper, then inked them up with Distress Stains before die cutting the flower shapes.  The leaves also feature the stamp on patterned paper for a different look.  The centers are fun new Candi embellishments we have in the store.  (For more May flowers, check out our new challenge over at the SCCB!)
If you follow our blog, you've seen this card already, but here's another look.  All the details can be seen on this post.  If you look close, you'll see that I've used the stamp for extra texture in the background as well as on the UTEE butterflies.
If you are a Stamp of the Month member, you'll save 35% on this stamp!  We do have a few extras available for purchase even if you aren't, though.  It's a beautiful image I'm sure you'll enjoy getting inky with it :)

I think it's safe to say a fun and fabulous time was had by all at Fiesta this year! Here's a few photos from the weekend... Thanks to all who came to play and huge thanks to our family and friends who helped us put this event together!
Thanks also to the local businesses whose donations this weekend helped us so we can make a larger donation to the BC Cancer Society!

We also have a nice set of cards to donate to Hospice- and will be opening up our Card Buffet for our Coffee & a Card this Thursday so everyone has a chance to contribute!

Ranger U!

Just a quick post to share a summary in photos of my trip to New Jersey for Ranger U! I had such an amazing time getting inky and learning from Tim Holtz, Claudine Hellmuth & Dyan Reavesly! So much inspirationin one weekend!  These photos will show you a few of the highlights... I'm sure you'll be hearing a ton more in future posts as I look forward to teaching techniques that I've learned and sharing them with all of you!

I hope you can see from these photos that I had an AMAZING time in New Jersey!  I haven't loaded photos from my 'real' camera yet but I did take several so I can hopefully scrapbook some of them!  (I had captions for these, but blogger is fighting with me and I have too much to do today to fight with it... sorry!)

It's National Scrapbooking Day this weekend, but I won't be getting any of that done yet... however, I am looking forward to a fabulous weekend at our annual FIESTA here!  We've got a group of fun & creative ladies coming to hang out with us and an amazing menu planned... Should be fun!
